Leaves turn bright yellow in Autumn. The plant is covered in large spines, and the stems stay green for several years, which gives a spectacular architectural appearance to the plant during the winter months. It produces small, yellow flowers and red fruits that have black seeds. If dried, the seed pods can be used as a condiment which is stronger and more pungent than black pepper! Its Autumn coloration is remarkable: somewhere between pink and red. Its spines will never die, instead, they grow and age together with the plant and in a few years, they became 10 times larger than in their first year. It can be planted into the ground, or into a large pot - keeping it on the patio; also suitable for bonsai. An unusual, hardy ornamental and spice. Although some sources say it is dioecious, one plant usually fruits well, but it would fruit better if you have several planted close to each other. It is suitable for smaller gardens, by a wall or in a border, but also good for the patio if grown in a container. It also makes a good bonsai. Poncirus trifoliata 'Flying Dragon' is an unusual shrub related to citrus, but extremely cold tolerant (fully hardy in the UK). Under warm climate, often used as the rootstock for grafting different citrus varieties due to its strong growth and cold tolerance. It opens its white scented flowers in March-April, before the leaves appear and from September, 4-5 cm large yellow, lemon-like fruits develop (stronger than a lemon; suitable for marmalade or for tea). The Hardy Lemon's leaves turn bright yellow in Autumn. The plant is covered in large spines, and the stems stay green for several years, which gives a spectacular architectural appearance to the plant during the winter months. The Makrut Lime can be classed as a compact shrub or perhaps very small tree which grows to a height of around 2m or slightly shorter if grown in a pot. The leaves are quite small and the wrinkled skinned,  mandarin sized fruits turn a greenish yellow when mature, yet they are often used when still green. This lovely species can be grown easily in a pot and will thrive in full sun or even dappled shade in a loam based soil.
