Diospyros cathayensis, native to Southern parts of China is extremely rare in cultivation, yet this edible Sechuan Persimmon will grow happily in a pot container or when planted in the garden. The shrubby like persimmon has attractive evergreen shiny dark green foliage. Greenish yellow flowers are followed by tasty small plum sized rounded and sometimes elongated fruits which mature from orange to a light red colour in late Autumn. Diospyros cathayensis makes a perfect accompaniment to both Diospyos kaki and Diospyros virginiana. The fruits of all three species are edible and your fruit bowl will be a great talking point! Diospyros cathayensis is mainly dioecious, therefore male and female plants are both needed to ensure a crop of fruit. Planting three together and growing it as a multistemmed looking tree would certainly enhance fruiting.
This delightful species thrives in a warm sheltered position and is not fussy about soil conditions and even heavy wet soils are not a problem. Diospyros cathayensis can grow to a height of around 2-4m and is hardy to -10c.
