- Afrocarpus latifolius is a most elegant tree, with narrow, leathery dark green foliage which is a subtle bronze colour when young. It grows more upright than other Podocarpus producing elegant yellow catkin like flowers which are later followed by dark blue, edible fleshy cones. Some cones can reach 3cm in diameter, one of the largest sized cones in this family. Native to South Africa and popular for cultivation. Botanists also class this particular species as Podocarpus latifolius, a plum pine. Can be grown in a pot for up to 10 years and is often used as a bonsai specimen. Once established after a few years of growth it will be hardy to -5C.
