Citron is one of the most ancient citrus species in existence. A medium sized shrub with large elongated leaves and pink flushed, scented flowers, which are followed by 15-20cm long, rough textured fruits.
Citron fruits have very little juice but their thick, oil-rich skins are important for the production of candied peel, flavouring and perfumery. The fruit is also used in some religious rituals.
Citron fruit is a valuable ingredient for cooking, especially in vegetable soups and the baking of cookies. It's also important as a traditional medicine in Asia and its juice is used for treating nausea and hypertension.
Various citron varieties have been produced over the years, of which one of the most bizarre is the octopus-like fruit known as 'Buddha's Hand'.
Citrus medica is hardy -5C when established, its growth rate is relatively fast and it makes a majestic pot plant.
