Ptelea trifoliata - Common hoptree

  • Also known as Stinking Ash, this small tree from the Rutaceae (relative to the lemon and orange) has aromatic, soft, trifoliate leaves which turn bright yellow in Autumn. In the early Summer,  light yellow flowers are produced which have a lemony fragrance. Circular winged fruits are also produced in early Summer which can be used as a hop substitute when making beer, or can be added to the yeast to rise quicker when making bread. The Ptelea trifoliata (Common hoptree) is a delightful, lush ornamental plant that is easy to grow (suitable for pot growing). It flowers abundantly from a young age. Best to keep it in dappled shade or full shade.

  • We have excellent quality, 10cm tall starter plants on offer.
