Corylus avellana is a deciduous shrub which produces dainty golden-yellow catkins during the winter and early spring. 'Fertile de Coutard’ is one of the most valuable hazelnut varieties due to its high yield and size of fruits. The spherical, edible fruits are larger and have a finer shell making them easier to crack. It has decorative foliage which turns a wonderful golden yellow in the autumn.
