Crataegus nigra is a deciduous fruit tree that can grow to heights of 6m. The Hungarian Hawthorn produces black fruits that can be eaten straight from the tree, cooked to make preserves and pie fillings, or can be dried for later use. The tree flowers in May, producing small, dainty white flowers. It is hermaphrodite, meaning it has both female and male organs and is pollinated by midges. It can tolerate atmospheric pollution and strong winds.
