Cryptomeria japonica - Japanese Cedar

  • Our best available, 15-20cm tall starter plant in a 7cm pot; freshly hand picked from our nursery benches; cultivated under UK climatic conditions. Every garden deserves this stunning evergreen. A wonderfully upright conifer, its growth is very slow when young but accelerates with age - still ideal for small gardens and can even be pruned (will eventually reach 4m x 2m in 10 years if not pruned). It also makes a good bonsai, branches out freely if pruned back. Older specimens feature tan-colored trunks which exfoliate in strips. Prefers sun for best coloration but won't mind a little shade, and likes well-drained soil. As a relatively slow-growing conifer it can be planted in most small gardens with little need to worry about size - planted together with other Cryptomeria's or conifers it will give a sparkling winter display with its foliage which turns a little bronze for the cold season. Hardy to -25 Celsius.
