Illicium floridanum is an unusual evergreen that originates from the USA and is a slow grower, reaching 8ft in height. The plant is very ornamental due to its star-like flowers that are made up of 20-30 maroon coloured petals, blooming from May-June. When up close to the plant, it is known to have a slightly fishy fragrance but this tends to be overshadowed by its leathery, glossy oval leaves. The Florida Anise Tree is drought tolerant and hardy to temperatures as low as -10c. The best position for the plant is to be placed where it will receive full sun but will also be sheltered from cold winds.
