Mahonia pallida – Mexican grape

  • Mahonia pallida is a small shrub with very ornamental, evergreen foliage: the composite leaves are made of just 1-2cm narrow, long leaflets, giving the plant an elegant, almost fern-like appearance. The Mountain grape originates from China, where it grows in moist ravines and valleys. One of a few plants to flower in Autumn, the yellow flower panicles are 10-20cm long, followed by blue fruits, covering the top of the branches by mid-Spring. The fruit is edible raw or cooked, added to porridge's, etc, with a fresh and relatively sweet taste at a time of year when very little other fruit can be picked from a UK garden.

  • We have excellent quality, 10-15cm tall (with leaves) starter plants on offer.
