Quercus trojana - Macedonian Oak, Trojan Oak
This majestic species is rarely available to purchase. It is a slow growing deciduous oak from the Balkans, Italy and Turkey which keeps its brown leathery foliage throughout the winter. A handsome tree producing up to 6cm long, huge acorns (maturing takes two years), a similar size to those of the Quercus libani. The Quercus trojana however, has much broader leaves, featuring a wavy margin and toothed edge. It grows very well on dry, alkaline soils, reaching a height of 5-6m with an overall evolved conical shape, which can be attributed to climate change and this species could quite rightly be classed as a "climate change species".
Its extremely valuable in forestry production as its hard timber was used for centuries for building ships and furniture. Fully hardy to the UK climate.
