Schinus molle or California pepper is an attractive edible ornamental tree, native to South America but now widely grown in mediterranean climates worldwide.
It has an arching habit which is further enhanced by the long stalked, composed leaves with narrow leaflets. Aromatic, pinkish red, pepper like fruits develop from the flowers, which hang in long bunches just like grapes. The seed is often mixed with black pepper and sold as "red pepper" (caution is needed as some substances in the seed can irritate the mucus membrane).
Oil can be distilled from the fruit and used as a spice in baking. It is also widely used as a herb.
It can be grown in a large pot and perfect as a patio plant, but it needs to be overwintered above -3C. Not fussy about soil type.
We have excellent quality, 20cm tall plants for sale.
