Ficus carica 'Babits' - Hungarian Babits Fig

  • Ficus carica 'Babits' is a variety from Hungary which produces reddish brown, large figs . The Hungarian Babits Fig is a very cold tolerant variety which means it is ideal for growing in the UK climate. The fruit weight can reach up to 80-100g and has a delicious dark red flesh. It is self-pollinating, so there is no need of help from the fig wasp for pollination. Figs in general are a well known fruit and have been cultivated since ancient times and grow wild in dry and sunny areas. Figs are mostly cultivated around the world for their fruits but they also offer a great architectural dimension with their showy ornamental leaves which also turn a delightful yellowish colour in the Autumn. After the leaves have fallen the fruits often remain on the bare branches. Figs can be found in continental climates with hot summers as far north as Hungary and Moravia and can be harvested up to four times per year. Thousands of cultivars, many named, have been developed as human migration brought the fig to many places outside its natural range. Two crops of figs are potentially produced each year, but in UK growing conditions, it is safer to use varieties with one crop as the first crop can often be damaged by Spring frosts. Most common figs have all female flowers that do not need pollination; the fruit develops through parthenocarpic means, but there are varieties which require the fig wasp for pollination (this insect usually cannot live in UK climate, this is why parthenocarpic varieties have to be used here in the UK to ensure a crop of fruits).  Hardiness: -15C. Growth rate: medium. Autumn coloration: yellow Position:  a sheltered sunny spot is the best position to ensure fruiting and avoid soils.
