Ficus carica 'Melanzana ' - Melanzana fig

  • Ficus carica 'Melanzana'. This tasty fig has Italian origins. A good cold tolerant variety which produces light violet/ dark pink fruits patterned with a slight stripy surface. The flesh is of a faded pink colour, aromatic and sweet to taste. Hardy to -15C, self-fertile and suitable for pot growing.  It's a great variety for the UK climate. The weight of the fruit size can reach up to 80g and has a pink sweet and aromatic flesh. Self-pollinating, so there is no need of help from the fig wasp for pollination. Our crop has different leaf forms from deeply lobed to slightly lobed. Figs can be found in continental climates with hot summers as far north as Hungary and Moravia and can be harvested up to four times per year. Thousands of cultivars, mostly named, have been developed as human migration brought the fig to many places outside its natural range.

  •  Position: a sheltered sunny spot is best, but avoid acidic soils.
