Tetracentron sinense - Spur leaf

  • Extremely rare in cultivation, Tetracentron sinense is a graceful ornamental tree, native in China, Vietnam, Nepal, fully hardy to the UK and most of Europe. A monospecific genus with one living species, it can almost be called a living fossil, it exists for so long. Its foliage and branch arrangement is somewhat similar to the Katsura Tree (Cercidiphyllum), but with a tooted edge and a pointed end, very pretty on the drooping branches. It can grow up to 10-12m but it can be trimmed to any height. On mature trees, up to a ft long !, narrow catkin flowers develop and turn into decorative fruits. The name tetra and centron refers to the four projections on the fruits.

  • It prefers a "woodlandy" kind of soil and will take dappled shade. Fully hardy.

  • We one year old, 8cm tall plants on offer (it grows much faster in year 2).
