Symplocos paniculata is a wonderful, underutilized small tree or large shrub best known for its peeling bark, sweetly fragrant creamy-white flowers in May and a breath taking crop of turquoise-blue fruit in late Summer and Autumn. Sapphire Berry is an excellent, low-maintenance choice for attracting birds and other wildlife to the yard. It requires an acidic soil and prefers a sunny or half-shady spot. Being self fertile, it fruits better by cross pollination from another Sapphire Berry, but it is not dioecious. Having two plants is the best way for a heavy crop of fruits. Height when adult is about 2-3m. Rarely if ever available. Slow grower.
