Diospyros rhombifolia, native to Southern parts of China is also extremely rare in cultivation, yet this edible Princess Persimmon will grow happily in a pot container or when planted in the garden. The shrubby like persimmon has attractive small leaves, popular as a bonsai subject. Greenish yellow flowers are followed by tasty small plum sized rounded and sometimes elongated fruits which mature from orange to a light red colour in late Autumn. Diospyros rhombifolia is mainly dioecious, therefore male and female plants are both needed to ensure a crop of fruit. Planting two together and growing it as a multistemmed looking tree would certainly enhance fruiting.
This delightful species thrives in a warm sheltered position and is not fussy about soil conditions and even heavy wet soils are not a problem. Diospyros rhombifolia can grow to a height of around 2-4m and is hardy to -10c.
Why not try this wonderful species. We have 5-6cm tall, one season old, leafless plants available to purchase.
