This American spicebush is rare in cultivation yet it makes an excellent shrub with yellow Spring flowers and Autumn colours, the young twigs and leaves make an excellent herbal tea. Lindera benzoin is a medium sized, deciduous shrub with simple, glossy leaves. The leaves turn pure yellow in the Autumn, contrasting well with the shiny red fruits on female plants. The Northern Spicebush flowers when the leaves appear, early Spring - a unique sight. For optimum growth it is best to position the shrub where it will be in partial shade/ and slightly acidic soil. It can withstand temperatures as low as -20c.
