An ancient plant, Ginkgo biloba also known as a living fossil was around during the age of the dinosaurs. A resilient species, plants of which survived the impact of an atomic bomb and they are still standing today. Ginkgo biloba is an unusual conifer which has distinct fan shaped leaves composed of two lobes, hence the name biloba. These fan shaped leaves turn to a golden yellow colour in autumn and almost all drop at once to create a yellow carpet of leaves. Also known as the Maidenhair Tree this exotic species can grow fairly large( up to 8 metres) over a long period of time and yet it makes a fantastic patio plant or why not try growing it as a bonsai. Can tolerate temperatures as low as -30C.
