Xylosma japonica - Dense Longwood, Japanese Xylosma
Another very rare species growing in Europe with Chinese origin. This evergreen small tree produces significant sized spines on its trunk, similar to those on the Gleditsia (Honey Locust).
The decorative, shiny foliage has a bronze hue in Spring with yellow flowers appearing later on the branches, followed by red then brown fruits. The young spines have an attractive reddish bronze colour. Great for lovers of bonsai and it also naturally grows well in a pot. If your looking to create a dense hedge in a sheltered garden, this plant is perfect. Hardy to about -5C.
