Skimmia japonica is a small, dome-shaped shrub that is densely branched with leathery, dark green leaves, originating from Japan. One of its main attractions is its fragrant flowers. In mid-spring, large clusters of creamy white, star shaped flowers are produced on the tips of the shrub’s branches. In the autumn, it produces red, glossy berries which then ripen and persist throughout winter. The berries contrast greatly against the dark green foliage becoming very ornamental. The Japanese Skimmia is known to be low maintenance and is perfect for shady gardens with part shade to full shade being best for its optimal growth and flowering. It can be planted in borders, containers on patios, slopes and banks or even woodland gardens.
