Prunus spinosa - Sloe, Blackthorn

This is the small, thorny, native shrub, excellent in hedges or as a single plant in a border. Very early flowering, followed by masses of 2 cm wide, rounded fruits, covering the branches all Autumn long. Easy to grow and fully hardy.

It's quite remarkable, that even until late January is still possible to harvest the fruit of the Blackthorn(Prunus spinosa), even though it's now late January. The fruit(Sloes) is very prolific on the branches of the Blackthorn and still looks as fresh as it did back in November, yet now sweeter to taste due to exposure to frost. The fruit is packed with Vitamin C and flavonoids. Perfect for mid Winter foraging and great for making jams, jellies and toppings for baked cakes.
The Blackthorn is one of the first native species to flower and flowering is encouraged during a mild spell before a late cold period running into early Spring, also known as a 'Blackthorn Winter'.

We have 30cm tall, two years old plants for sale.
