Elaeagnus angustifolia - Russian Olive, Persian Olive

  • The Russian Olive is a highly resilient small tree or large shrub prized for its hardiness, ornamental beauty, and unique edible fruit. Exceptionally tolerant of both cold and drought, it thrives in challenging conditions and makes a striking addition to gardens, windbreaks, or large containers.

In late spring, it bursts into bloom with clusters of fragrant, yellow flowers that fill the air with a sweet, honey-like scent. These are followed by silvery, olive-shaped berries about the size of a cherry. Though the fruit has a dry, mealy texture, it is intensely sweet when fully ripe and can be enjoyed fresh or made into flavourful jellies and preserves.

The narrow, silvery-grey foliage gives the plant a soft, shimmering appearance that complements its rugged nature. It is easy to grow, requires minimal care, and tolerates poor soils, wind, and neglect making it a great choice for low-maintenance landscapes. Incredibly cold-hardy, Elaeagnus angustifolia can withstand temperatures down to -30°C.
