Diospyros virginiana is a very elegant, ornamental, small fruit tree with good autumn coloration. The American Persimmon produces very sweet tasting fruit when ripe with an exquisitely rich flavour. The fruits can be eaten straight from the tree or dried (grow to the size of a tomato). This is an excellent food source for the birds during winter as they remain on the tree for a long time. Its fragranced flowers appear among the large, leathery, full leaves. It starts to produce fruit from around the age of 5, but it is dioecious, so you may consider to order 2 or 3 plants to get a great chance to have both sexes (we have another listing for 3 plants). Fruits grow to tomato size.
The intended main use of this plant is to grow food for human consumption. We always recommend further research to learn the different ways in which the food source can be prepared and consumed.
