Idesia polycarpa originates from China and is a medium sized deciduous tree that can reach up to heights of 12m. The attractive leaves are large, glossy, smooth and heart shaped. During early Summer the tree produces small, yellow flowers that are positioned in long drooping racemes. The flowers are known to be highly fragranced having the sweetest smell. Both male and female plants tend to be required for the female plant to produce the striking red berries annually (although some fruit can form without a male plant nearby). The fruit is edible whether it is raw or cooked. The Chinese Wonder Tree grows to its best when in full sun or half shade. It is somewhat drought tolerant and is hardy to temperatures as low as -15c.
