Malus fusca - Oregon Crab

  • A wild fruit the Pacific (side of) North America from as far North as Alaska, down to California. A small, upright tree or shrub, with a height of 2-3m after 10 years, it has a very good tolerance for waterlogged soils and even salt, still produces edible fruits - quite acidic but excellent in jellies and for drying to make "crab raisins".  These are elongated, 1-2cm long, orange to brown when ripe - very late ripening, in November. Pure white flowers and a decorative foliage appear late in Spring, usually not before early May. Yellow Autumn coloration. The leafless plant in Winter has some architectural effect with its small, upright branches.

  • We have excellent quality, 15-20cm tall hardened plants on offer.
