Pyrus ussuriensis - Manchurian Pear, Chinese Pear

  • Rarely offered. Native to the far East of Russia and NE China, probably the hardiest Pyrus species due to it withstanding temperatures as low as -35C.  The Manchurian Pear (4-5m when adult) is covered by pinkish flowers in Spring, fading to white. Beautiful, red and orange autumn colours develop by early November! Its golf ball sized pears mature to yellowish brown and are a delicacy for birds and mammals, also edible to humans, especially after the frost "bite" it, when it makes an excellent jam or jelly. The Chinese Pear can be grown in a pot.

We have freshly potted, 10cm tall, young plants for sale.

The intended main use of this plant is to grow food for human consumption. We always recommend further research to learn the different ways in which the food source can be prepared and consumed.
