Stachyurus praecox - Early Stachyurus

  • The beautiful bell-shaped, pale-yellow flowers borne on catkin like spikes or racemes diffuse a wonderful, sweet scent. Flowers drop vertically from the almost bare branches, resembling elegant strings of pearls, putting on an unforgettable sight from February to March (already visible on the plant in winter).

The flowers are produced before or together with the appearance of young, slender-pointed ovate leaves. In autumn, the foliage turns to fantastic shades of red and purple. As the flowers fade, small berry-like, pea sized fruits appear which may later turn yellow, adding ornamental value from July.
  • Stachyurus praecox is a deciduous shrub that is very showy in the early spring and late summer. The Early Stachyurus has 10-15cm in length slender-pointed ovate leaves, dropping racemes and 10-12cm in length bell-shaped, pale yellow flowers late winter to mid-spring (already visible on the plant in winter). These are produced before or together with the appearance of young leaves, the flowers diffusing a sweet scent. It often develops an arching habit. As the foliage matures, the petioles redden through the primary vein and the toothed margin of the leaf has a fine defining line of red. In autumn, the foliage turns to the shades of red to purple. As the flowers fade, small berry-like fruits appear which turn to yellow-red later on. This plant is tolerant to wetter soils and grows best in semi-shade.

  • Stachyurus praecox is a very adaptable plant. It looks fantastic in any borders or near entrances, in a woodland garden or grown against a wall where it can even be trained flat. This plant is tolerant to wetter soils and grows best in semi-shade. Fully hardy to the UK, it begins to flower from a young age of 2 or 3.

  • We have excellent quality, 10-20 cm tall starter plants on offer.

  • The intended main use of this plant is to grow food for human consumption. We always recommend further research to learn the different ways in which the food source can be prepared and consumed.
