If one wants to achieve a late Summer full flower display with a compact shrub, Clethra alnifolia ticks all the boxes! An erect but just up to 1.5m tall, deciduous shrub, native in North America, with stunning white flower panicles from mid July through August which also attract a lot of pollinators. The leaves are simple and elongated, with fine hair and the flowers last long. It grows well in wet soils and in dappled shade, excellent in a border, and fully hardy in Britain.
