Ziziphus jujuba 'Lang' (large fruited) - Chinese Date Lang

  • Ziziphus jujuba Lang is a slow growing, multi-stemmed fruit tree from the Far-East. The fruit of the Pear Jujube is large, at least 3-4 cm in size, piriform, with a green and brown skin. The distinctive pear shaped, edible fruits mature from green to brown in the Autumn. The fruits are naturally high in sugar, making it one of the best varieties for drying, when they develop an irresistibly rich, deep sweetness and chewy, date-like texture. The fruits can also be enjoyed fresh, particularly when fully ripe. Tiny yellow flowers develop in the spring.

  • The Chinese Date Lang is drought tolerant, not fussy to soil conditions and is suitable for pot growing. The Lang variety was selected in China for its large, tasty fruits, regular good crop, and good growth. It is hardy to -30C and copes with all aspects of the British climate.
  • We have 15cm tall plants for sale. (not from seed). Please note that its side shoots naturally die back to the main stem in November which is hardened off with a top bud, so only the main stem (and roots) remain alive in Winter! It will bud out from late March and will be lush green by May.
  • The intended main use of this plant is to grow food for human consumption. We always recommend further research to learn the different ways in which the food source can be prepared and consumed.
