Stewartia pseudocamellia is a small, deciduous ornamental shrub that is of interest during multiple seasons. It typically grows to a height of 20m and originates from Japan. During mid-late summer, delicate cream/white flowers with orange-yellow anthers are in bloom (known to resemble camellias) which are sweetly fragranced which attracts the bees. In the Autumn it is known for its showy autumnal display which consists of rich reds, burgundy and orange leaves. When the leaves have fallen its attractive, multicoloured, flaky bark is exposed which peels away in colours of red-brown, pink and grey. The Deciduous Camellia is a hardy plant, resistant to temperatures as low as -15c. Full sun, dappled shade and neutral to acidic soil are best for its optimal growth and flowering.
