Malus hupehensis - Tea Crab Apple (15-20cm tall)
A wild fruit from the Hupeh province of China, Malus hupehensis can make a good display in your garden due to several factors. It is versatile, drought tolerant and produces attractive, fragranced flowers from pinkish coloured buds in the Spring. In the late Autumn, the tree has edible cherry sized, light brown apples, soft when ripe which provide food for the birds as well as you. The fruit can be used in conserves or eaten raw. During November, the trees fall colour is in spectacular shades of orange. The Tea Crab Apple is well suitable for bonsai or even for the patio if keeping it in a large pot.
Malus sieboldii (Malus toringo) - Toringo Crabapple (30-40cm tall)
A very rare species, also known as Malus toringo, native to the mountains and hills of Japan. Malus sieboldii (Toringo Crabapple) is an unusual but attractive garden tree, reaching a height of only 3-4m, a great choice for those with a smaller garden. The green leaves are bright, variable in shape and often toothed. In the autumn, the leaves turn a vibrant red or orange which creates a stunning autumnal display and makes a great centre piece to your garden. During spring, masses of fragrant, pink flowers are in bloom and when open slowly fade to white. By the end of the Summer, clusters of attractive, pea-sized pale red or yellow fruits are found hanging from the branches.
