Aesculus californica is a deciduous small tree or large shrub that has a handsome form and foliage, originating from California. From late spring to early summer a spectacular display of creamy-white flowers bloom, giving off a beautifully sweet scent. The inflorescence is very large, relative to the foliage. Later on, the flowers give way to rough-skinned, pear-shaped fruits (not edible). It is a low-branched tree and has smooth, pale silver bark which contrasts beautifully against its glossy dark green leaves. The California Chestnut has an early leaf drop, forming a wonderful silhouette during the wintertime. Hardy to temperatures as low as -15C.
