Celastrus angulatus is a vigorous climber plant with simple, rounded, thick leaves with a deep yellow Autumn coloration and creamy white flower panicles in early Summer. In October, 1cm wide 3 valved capsules, straw yellow on the outside (papery coat), reveal vibrant orange seed coats (aryls) when they open up. The fruits hang from the stems like grapes are very ornamental, more so than the flowers. The Chinese Staff Vine easily reaches 4-5m in height if there is support to climb onto – best to cover old tree trunks with the plant, but it can be trained to fences and walls too. Some young shoots can develop spikes. Easy to grow, deciduous, it performs well in any good soil. Fully hardy.
