A wild fruit from the Hupeh province of China, Malus hupehensis can make a good display in your garden due to a number of factors. It is versatile, drought tolerant and produces attractive, fragranced flowers from pinkish coloured buds in the Spring. In the late Autumn the tree has edible cherry sized, light brown apples, soft when ripe which provide food for the birds as well as you. The fruit can be used in conserves or eaten raw. During November, the trees fall colour is in spectacular shades of orange. The Tea Crab Apple is well suitable for bonsai or even for the patio if keeping it in a large pot!
