Ginkgo biloba - Maidenhair Tree

Number of plants

  • The Ginkgo biloba, often referred to as a “living fossil” has to be one of the most unique and fascinating plants out there. It's like a living time capsule, having been around for an incredible 270 million years! Originally from just one province in China, this tree is so special that it stands in a league of its own—it even has its own genus, family, order, class, and division.
  • The fan-shaped leaves of the Ginkgo tree are instantly recognisable and have been compared to the fronds of the maidenhair fern, hence the common name "Maidenhair Tree". In autumn, the bright green leaves turn a brilliant yellow, creating stunning displays in parks and gardens. The leaves often drop all at once, carpeting the ground in gold. It’s a gift that keeps on giving with its seasonal beauty.
  • Ginkgo trees are known to be incredibly resilient. Some Ginkgo’s in Hiroshima, Japan, survived the atomic bomb blast in 1945 and are still thriving today! They are commonly planted along city streets worldwide due to them being highly tolerant of urban pollution.
  • This big friendly giant is also surprisingly adaptable, suitable for any sized garden as it will even thrive in a pot on the patio or as a bonsai. A great option for both experienced gardeners and beginners.
  • We have 20 cm tall plants on offer in 8cm pots. Our seeds are from ancient trees, close to the original population.
