Catalpa bignonioides Aurea has a superb, yellow foliage colour which gives an enhanced architectural effect due to its handsome, large leaves and grand bell shaped flower panicles that are produced in mid summer. Interestingly, followed on from the Summer the Indian Bean Tree has up to 50cm long fruits which remain on the plant until the following Spring. When adult, it makes a great climbing tree for kids as it tends to branch out low when pruned. It is best to plant it near a wall so its protected form strong winds which can damage the leaves. The Indian Bean Tree will need free draining soil, other than that it is easy to grow. Its most important value is the late flowering period.
