Punica granatum 'Dark' is another rare, ornamental pomegranate cultivar but with darker, sometimes purple leaves (good Autumn coloration) and red flowers. The flowers are followed by dark, violet coloured (almost black from a distance) fruits which are edible just like the red form. Any established plant will flower freely on any good soil. It prefers a hot position, for example against a south facing wall but will flower in a good protected sunny position. However, it does not require as much heat as the other fruiting varieties as very few fruits will develop from the flowers on this variety. The Dark Pomegranate is believed to have originated in the area from East Iran to Northern India but has been cultivated around the Mediterranean for so long (several millennia) that its true native range is not accurately known. Another great cultivar, very rarely offered. There will be some differences among seedlings but all the good, darker leaved ones are selected. Therefore, the fruits will most probably be of the darker colour too.
