Ziziphus jujuba Dongzao - Chinese Date "Dong" (large fruited)

  • Ziziphus jujuba Dongzao is a slow growing, multi-stemmed fruit tree from the Far-East. It has plum-sized, edible fruits (taste between an apple and a pineapple) that mature from green to brown in the Autumn. The fruits can be eaten raw, cooked or in confectionary. Best enjoyed fresh while still light green to yellow, the fruits become sweeter as they ripen, developing beautiful dappled mahogany-brown colouring. As a late-season variety, 'Dong' ripens later than cultivars such as 'Li', extending the jujube harvest into winter. Tiny yellow flowers develop in the summer. The Chinese Date "Dong" is drought tolerant, not fussy to soil conditions and is suitable for pot growing.

  • A vigorous and adaptable tree, it copes with a range of soils, is highly drought tolerant and can withstand temperatures down to around -30°C. With its open, spreading habit, it can reach 4-5 metres when mature, or be grown in a large patio container.
  • We have 20cm tall, lush, branched plants available, propagated two years ago from tissue culture. Please note that its side shoots naturally die back to the main stem in November which is hardened off with a top bud, so only the main stem (and roots) remain alive in Winter! It will bud out from late March and will be lush green by May.
  • The intended main use of this plant is to grow food for human consumption. We always recommend further research to learn the different ways in which the food source can be prepared and consumed.
