Bonsai Starter - Maple Collection

  • We have carefully curated a collection of our favourite Maple tree's which would make perfect bonsai's.

  • The Bonsai Starter - Maple Collection contains one of each plant in either an 8cm or 9cm pot.

  • Acer sempervirens - Cretan Maple (5cm tall): A semi-evergreen or evergreen small tree or large shrub, this is a great maple for small gardens, for the patio or bonsai. The Cretan Maple is one of the most drought- and heat-tolerant species in the genus, occurring on dry, sunny hillsides at moderate elevations. It is often a shrubby tree with smaller, evergreen, leathery, glossy dark green leaves. The bark on the Cretan Maple is dark grey, smooth in young trees, becoming scaly and shallowly fissured in mature trees. The new leaves have a distinctive, reddish colour. A slow growing species, rarely offered.

  • Acer monspessulanum - Montpellier Maple (8cm tall): Acer monspessulanum also known as the Montpellier Maple is a small leaved maple tree that is drought tolerant.

  • Acer palmatum - Japanese Maple (8cm tall): A small tree that originates from Japan, with beautifully lobed or composed leaves and striking red-orange autumn colours. The flowers are small but pinkish, with red winged fruits developing on the tree. The glorious autumn colours become the main attraction, adding an ornamental value. Slow growing, the Japanese Maple makes an excellent small tree to have in borders or on the patio (with regular watering). It is also great for bonsai. The Japanese Maple prefers slightly acidic soil with good drainage due to it having very thin roots. Our plants are in a special compost mix with added loam, which provides an excellent environment for the roots. We have lovely starter plants with red foliage and very pretty leaves.
