- Castanopsis purpurella (Chinese evergreen chinkapin) would easily get into the guinness record book as the slowest growing fagaceae (beech family) species and it only germinates when the weather is warm. The little stalks look like sticks in the seedtray until the first leaves unfold in July. It will soon grow into a beautiful evergreen tree, producing edible nuts! They are sweet and nutty.
- Castanopsis prefers slightly acidic and good fertile soil. It tolerates good Summer heat and it is easy to grow. Deciduous. Our seeds are from a Chinese Chinkapin forest.
