    Drimys winteri - Winter's Bark

It is not often that you see this shrub available for sale, but it's a real treasure for those gardeners looking for an eye catching combination of pure white, show flowers and handsome appearance. Drimys winteri first became known to European botany as an imported bark which arrived in England by the hand of Captain John Wynter, an explorer of South America.
Named to honour Wynter, Winter's Bark forms a large evergreen shrub, up to 15m tall, in Chile and Argentina, but rarely grows taller than 4m in the UK. It is certainly well worth planting for its fragrant, creamy-white flowers which appear in great  abundance during early Summer. The mahogany bark and leaves when crushed produce a wonderful fresh aroma. Drymis is historically valuable for its Vitamin C-rich bark used to fight scurvy, and suitable for sheltered, moist, well-drained spots in the milder parts of Britain.
The aromatic, pungent bark is powdered and used as a pepper substitute in Brazil, Chile and Argentina to treat indigestion and scurvy. All in all a superb, versatile shrub which should be planted more often. Hardy to -7C when established.

  • We have one year old, 15-20cm tall plants available.
