With its poetic name and striking appearance, the Autumn Olive is as charming as it is hardy. Native to Asia, this versatile shrub thrives in a wide range of soils, tolerates both sun and shade, and handles coastal winds and drought with ease even surviving temperatures as low as -30°C.
Its silvery leaves and stems give it a graceful glow, especially when golden, highly fragrant flowers bloom in spring drawing in bees and other pollinators. By autumn, the real reward appears: clusters of tiny, silvery berries that ripen to red and fall effortlessly when ready to harvest.
Though small (about a centimetre wide), the berries grow in the thousands on a single plant. Eaten raw or turned into jams and jellies, they're rich in fibre, packed with vitamins, and even edible seed and all.
