Ficus carica 'Turca' - Turca fig

  • Ficus carica 'Turca' A medium vigorous variety with an upright habit. It has attractive trilobe and pentalobe leaves. A very good cropper, even though the fruits are of a medium size, a vast amount are produced in the season. The fruits have an elongated-spherical or pyriformis shape. The skin is thin and dark purple, almost black in colour, with a dark pink firm and aromatic flesh. In the UK it usually fruits once a year, but if kept in a polytunnel, it is capable of fruiting twice. Fully hardy, self fertile so no need of help from the fig wasp for pollination. This particular fig variety is well known and has been cultivated since ancient times and grows wild in dry and sunny areas. It is mostly cultivated around the world for its fruits but it is also a great architectural plant with showy ornamental leaves which turn an attractive yellow colour in the Autumn. After the leaves have fallen the fruits often remain on the bare branches. Position: a sheltered sunny spot is best, but avoid acidic soils.
