Japanese Apricot - Prunus mume

Native in China, it represents the end of Winter: a deciduous tree which starts to flower in mid January, giving you a beautiful sight mid-Winter, even with snow on the branches. Extremely hardy, it is grown for hundreds of years, even as a traditional food: the fruits are 3cm wide, yellow when ripe, acidic but edible, however in the Far-East, it is widely used as a condiment and a vegetable, picked green and preserved in salt, called the "umboshi plum". The foliage turns orange and yellow in Autumn. Easy to grow, not fussy to soil conditions and prefers full sun. It is suitable for pot growing. We have strong, 30cm tall starter plants on offer.
