From the Italian variety, this is a well fruiting and very hardy plant which produces large, red fruits with purple flesh and numerous red flowers. It has a compact habit with its ultimate height reaching 1-1.5m. The pomegranate cultivar (or sub species) is believed to have originated in the area of Iran East to Northern India, but has been cultivated around the Mediterranean for so long (several millennia) that its true native range is not accurately known. Any established plants will flower freely on any good soil. It prefers a hot position, for example against a south facing wall but will flower in a good protected sunny position. It is easy to grow and is well suitable for the patio where it can be overwintered.
