- Schinus molle or California pepper is a very handsome edible ornamental tree, native in South America but planted in mediterranean climates worldwide.
- It has an arching habit, further enhanced by the long stalked, composed leaves with narrow leaflets. Aromatic, pink or red, pepper like fruits develop from the flowers, these are ganging in long bunches, like grapes. The seed is often mixed with black pepper and sold as "red pepper" (caution is needed as some substances in the seed can irritate the mucus membrane).

Oil can be distilled from the fruit and used as a spice in bakery. It is also widely used as a herb.

It can be grown in a large pot, it makes an attractive patio plant, but it needs to be overwintered above -3C. Not fussy to soil.
