Schisandra chinensis - Five-flavour Berry, Magnolia Vine

  • Schisandra chinensis has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine to treat liver conditions, stomach disorders, and as a tonic to improve vitality and is also used in various formulas for fatigue and sleep (not just the berries but the roots are used too). However, it is worth to plant it even for the stunning pink, white and red flowers.

  • Magnolia Vine is a deciduous climber, vigorous enough to cover fences and old tree trunks, or trellises. Schisandra is fully hardy and grows best on moist but well drained soil, in dappled shade. The fleshy, cup shaped, white flowers are followed by striking red fruits resembling small bunches of grapes.
  • We have excellent quality, 8cm tall, one year old plants from seed, available.

  • Please note that the species is dioecious and if you are after the fruit, for a great chance for both gender, 3 or 4 plants is advised to be planted together (even to the same spot, grown as multistemmed).
