Hovenia dulcis - Japanese Raisin Tree

  • Hovenia dulcis is an ornamental deciduous fruit tree with a medium growth rate, growing up to 10m. The tree originates from Asia. The Japanese Raisin Tree is made up of large, glossy leaves that are slightly pointed. During July, the tree produces clusters of small, cream coloured flowers which are followed by the fruits. The tree begins to produce the fruits in the UK after 3-4 years which are edible whether raw (they are sweet and have a similar flavour to that of the pear) or cooked, when dried they have a similar texture and flavour to raisins. It is a hardy plant, surviving temperatures as low as -20c.

  • We have 5cm tall, young seedling plants on offer. These need to be kept in their pot and grow them on until June - July before potting them up or planting them out.
  • The intended main use of this plant is to grow food for human consumption. We always recommend further research to learn the different ways in which the food source can be prepared and consumed.
