Myrsine divaricata - Weeping Mapou, Matipu

  • Myrsine divaricata - Weeping Mapou, Matipo

Myrsine divaricata is a compact shrub (up to 2m in height) with a zig-zag branching pattern and edible small fruits. Endemic to New Zealand where it can reach the size of a small tree, the Matipo has a strongly divaricating habit with interlaced branches. The woody parts are quite stiff and covered with tiny white flowers in Spring and followed by 0.5cm long, purple or pink fruits which are favoured by birds. It can withstand high soil water levels, but also drought in the same time and will be hardy to around -10C. A perfect pick for a sheltered border, with a habit somewhat similar to the Wiggy-wig plant (Muehlenbeckia astonii).

We have two years old, 15-20cm tall, zig-zag branched plants available for sale.
